Mahindra has recalled the XUV700 crossover yet again, and this is the 3rd recall for the best-selling SUV in the last one month. The latest recall for the Mahindra XUV700 aims to fix the alternator belt and the auto-tensioner pulley. These are critical parts whose failure can result in a breakdown of the vehicle, making the latest recall for the Mahindra XUV700 a ‘critical recall’. The latest recall is also aimed at flashing the ESCL (Electronic Steering Column Lock).

The alternator belt is a part that connects a vehicle’s engine to the alternator. It’s responsible for the smooth functioning of the alternator, which in turn derives power from the vehicle’s engine to re-charges the battery. If the alternator belt snaps, it could lead to the battery of the vehicle getting discharged rapidly, leading to the vehicle breaking down. The XUV700 – with its complex electronics – consumes a lot of battery power, making the alternator absolutely critical.

Through the latest recall, Mahindra dealers will replace the alternator belt and the auto-tensioner pulley of the affected vehicles. XUV700 owners are advised to get in touch with their Mahindra dealers to check if their SUV is covered under the recall. It’s unclear if the latest recall affects the all wheel drive version of the SUV or whether all variants of the SUV are affected.

The two other prior recalls were for the all-wheel drive trims of the XUV700. In the first recall, the prop shaft was to be checked and replaced if necessary while the second recall – again on the AWD variants – was aimed at checking the rear coil springs of the SUV. India is yet to get a comprehensive, Government-mandated vehicle recall program. The current recalls are voluntary in nature, and are totally dependent on the vehicle manufacturer’s judgment.

Launched in August 2021, the Mahindra XUV700 has been a super hit. Mahindra has delivered about 50,000 units of its flagship SUV and is sitting on an order book that has over 100,000 bookings. The massive demand, coupled to part shortages, has meant that Mahindra XUV700 buyers face waiting times of up to 2 full years for certain trims.

The Mahindra XUV700 sold in India starts from Rs. 13.18 lakh, and is offered in over 20 variants. There are two engines on offer: a 2 liter turbocharged petrol that Mahindra calls mFalcon, and a 2.2 liter turbodiesel that goes by the name mHawk. Both engines get 6 speed manual and torque converter automatic gearbox options. Only the diesel trims get an all wheel drive function as an option. Most variants are front wheel driven.
